Dear Reader,
I hope this newsletter finds you as well as possible and that you are sitting somewhere safe, feeling the gentle support of a cushion or pillow behind you, and finding moments of steadiness amidst the uncertainty of this time.
As I write to you, I find myself unsure of where to start. This past month has been incredibly difficult—for me, for those around me, and likely for you as well. I’ve felt an overwhelming connection to my fellow Angelenos, to the people driving next to me on the freeway, to the shoppers ahead of me at the grocery store, to strangers navigating this moment alongside me. Amidst the heaviness, witnessing countless acts of kindness has been a balm, reminding me of our shared humanity.
We had planned this month’s blog on escapism long before the fires, the political shifts, and the relentless uncertainty we now face. And yet, it feels more relevant than ever. Like an old friend, I’ve turned to escapism to get through—watching countless seasons of The Office, organizing and reorganizing, letting podcasts fill the silence. At times, these things have helped quiet my mind. But I’ve also missed time with loved ones and sacrificed sleep, choices that don’t serve my well-being. I’m working on finding balance, acknowledging my need to escape while staying mindful of when it becomes avoidance.
If you, too, have leaned on escapism, I hope it has brought you some comfort. In this month’s blog, we explore its benefits, its risks, and how to engage with it more intentionally. We hope it offers guidance and reassurance. And if you find yourself needing more support, please know that we are here and encourage you to reach out. You can contact us via email at info@takeroottherapy.com or by phone/text at (323) 388-5578.
Wishing you warmth and comfort,
Saba Harouni Lurie (she/her/hers)

Why Do We Escape Reality, and When Does It Become a Problem?: Understanding Escapism and Engaging In Escapism Mindfully
I was a late reader, but once I started, I was a goner. I read nonstop, and family friends lovingly referred to me as a bookworm (or at least, I would like to believe it was lovingly). I read in the car, during social events, and once, on a roller coaster when it was slow to start. And my interest in storytelling doesn’t stop at books…

Community Events
Kid’s Town Hall
This event is an opportunity for our families who are most affected to come together as a community and give your kids the mic.
Carefully facilitated by educators and therapists, this gathering is an opportunity for children to share their experiences, curiosities, and feelings while helping them regulate and navigate what comes next together.
The event will feature a Stuffed Animal Adoption station for children to take home new lovies with the help of Comfort Bears In Catastrophe along with backpacks filled with school supplies. Bob Baker Marionettes will be interacting with the children. Bub & Grandma’s and Carla’s Fresh Market will cater the kids’ dinner. Julie Fernandez will offer somatic exercises. Becky Stark will guide us in a Community Peace Choir. Art therapists will facilitate some art experiences. Plus special guests and so much more!
