Take Root Therapy March Newsletter

We get curious about our inner critic, fly kites, and learn to build new friendships.

A Letter From Our Founder

Hi there,

Spring is finally here, and it’s feeling… wonky. We had a few warm days, but today, when I stepped outside, I was shocked by the cold. It’s disorienting—almost like an external reflection of how I’ve been feeling internally. The world keeps spinning, but uncertainty seems to be everywhere, and I’ve felt it in many areas of my life.

When I’m feeling uncertain, I tend to be more irritable, and then I turn around and criticize myself for not being my best self. It’s a frustrating cycle. But even though the irritability and anxiety are still present, this season, I’m working on showing myself more compassion instead of falling into self-criticism.

That’s why this month’s blog article is all about self-criticism—where it comes from, why it’s so persistent, and, most importantly, how to quiet that inner critic. I hope you’ll join the conversation because you, too, deserve to speak to yourself with the same kindness you offer others. And if you need support—whether with this or anything else—we’re here for you and hope you reach out. You can contact us via email at info@takeroottherapy.com or by phone/text at (323) 388-5578.

Warmly,
Saba Harouni Lurie (she/her/hers)

Why Am I So Hard On Myself? Understanding Self-Criticism and Learning to Quiet Your Inner Critic

My schedule has been jam-packed recently: my kids are playing multiple sports in addition to their other after-school activities, and all of it spills into our weekends. We go from one game or birthday party to another, squeezing in meals, caring for our dog, and then tending to a never-ending to-do list. This week, their school has early dismissals all week, and my partner has been out of town…
