Hi folks,
Happy Pride Month!
I know I’m late. I had dreams of sending this out to you at the start of the month so that we could highlight all of the pride events.
And then life happened, and for me, that included a challenging conversation with my parents about my identity as a bisexual/pansexual woman. I had already decided on writing this month’s blog article on the importance of chosen family, and I found myself relying heavily on my chosen family as I processed. So instead of working on our blog article or newsletter, I let myself be cocooned by my loved ones. It’s exactly what I needed.
If you identify as LGBTQIA+, genderqueer, gender nonconforming, or nonbinary, I hope you have been celebrated and are celebrating the wonderful you that you are. And if you are fortunate enough to love someone in this world, I hope you have continued to show up for them.
If you’re still trying to find your chosen family or need help knowing how to best show up as an ally, please check out our article. And if you need any additional support with this or anything else, please reach out. Our email address is info@takeroottherapy, and you can reach us by phone or text at (323) 388-5578. We’re here and want to help.
Warmly,
Saba Harouni Lurie (she/her/hers)

Where Can I Be Loved and Accepted?: The Importance of Chosen Family for LGBTQIA+ Individuals
During college, I often felt homesick. I would experience this longing to go home, and when I finally did, I was disappointed. What I longed for had never really existed, or at least not where I imagined it would be. Being accepted fully, being seen and loved and celebrated, is not something my birth family could offer. While we still have a relationship, their love comes with stipulations and conditions, including the condition that I hide parts of myself.
That’s not the case with my chosen family…
