Take Root Therapy August Newsletter

We tackle back-to-school anxiety, make art, and rediscover the joy of reading.

A Letter From Our Founder

Dear friends,

Another month has come and gone, and for my family, that means the school year has officially started (even though it’s still August, which makes little sense to me). My family spent some time vacationing on the east coast right before the school year started, and it was definitely what we needed. We soaked up quality family time, went on adventures, got lost… it was great. And then we came back home to LA and hit the ground running.

There were a few hiccups along the way, but I’ve found that getting back into the routine has brought some relief and some grief. Already, I find that I am missing time with my kids and time to myself. It takes me time to adjust to transitions, and I think that’s true for most of us. A wise friend recently asked what I want to continue to savor during the last days of summer, and what I want to carry into the fall, and I’ve been reflecting on this question. In addition to the delicious stone fruits I have been inhaling, I am trying to take some slowness into the next season too. I am still making time to read. Still making time to be with those I love.

As the school year started, I was struck by the back-to-school stress my kids were expressing, and it reminded me that this experience is so universal for families, whether you’re sending a kindergartener off for the first time or watching a college student navigate new independence. I know many families are carrying additional stresses this season, whether it’s navigating new schools, financial pressures, or other challenges that make this transition feel even heavier. Our article explores this phenomenon across all ages, diving into what causes school anxiety, how to recognize it, and practical ways to support students through these transitions. While the strategies apply to children of all ages, we’ve included specific guidance for the unique pressures that teens and young adults face during this season.

With care,
Saba Harouni Lurie (she/her/hers)

Back-to-school season can be exciting, but it can also bring a wave of stress and anxiety for both kids and parents.
